A Guide to Engagement Ring Shapes: Finding Your Silhouette
Before carat, before colour, most people fall in love with a shape. The outline of the centre stone defines the whole personality of a ring — timeless or modern, soft or architectural. Here is our guide to the eight shapes we work with most, and what each one brings to the hand.
Round brilliant
The most classic choice, and the most brilliant. A round is cut to return as much light as possible, so it sparkles from every angle. It suits every setting style — solitaire, halo, three-stone — and never dates.
Choose it if: you want maximum sparkle and a ring that will feel right in fifty years. Shop round
Oval
One of the most requested shapes of the moment, and for good reason. An oval has nearly the brilliance of a round, but its elongated shape makes the stone look larger for its carat weight and lengthens the finger. Worn north–south it is elegant; turned east–west it feels modern.
Choose it if: you want presence and sparkle with a softer, more romantic outline. Shop oval
Pear
Part round, part marquise, a pear is graceful and a little unexpected. Worn with the point towards the fingertip, it elongates the hand beautifully. A good pear has a balanced, symmetrical shoulder line.
Choose it if: you love something distinctive but still classic. Shop pear
Emerald
A step cut with long, open facets that create a “hall of mirrors” effect rather than glitter. Emerald cuts are quietly glamorous and very architectural. Because the facets are so open, clarity matters more in an emerald cut than in most other shapes.
Choose it if: your style is minimal, tailored and timeless. Shop emerald
Radiant
The outline of an emerald with the fire of a brilliant. Radiants have trimmed corners and a crushed-ice sparkle that is lively and modern. A practical choice too, since the trimmed corners are less prone to chipping.
Choose it if: you want a clean, rectangular shape that still sparkles. Shop radiant
Cushion
A softly squared stone with rounded corners, like a pillow — hence the name. Cushions have a romantic, vintage character and pair beautifully with halos and hidden halos.
Choose it if: you’re drawn to old-world romance. Shop cushion
Marquise
Long and pointed at both ends, the marquise shows more surface area for its carat weight than most shapes, so it looks impressive on the hand. It is enjoying a fashionable revival, especially in yellow gold and east–west settings.
Choose it if: you want a statement with vintage soul. Shop marquise
Princess
A crisp square brilliant with sharp corners and plenty of sparkle. Princess cuts look striking in clean, geometric settings; we recommend claws that protect the corners.
Choose it if: you love bold, modern lines. Shop princess
Try shapes on your own hand. The one you can’t stop looking at is usually the answer.
A note on proportions
For elongated shapes — oval, pear, marquise, emerald and radiant — the length-to-width ratio changes the look dramatically. A slimmer oval feels elegant and elongating; a wider one feels softer. We’ll show you options side by side when you design your ring, and you’ll receive a CAD and mockup so you can see your exact proportions before anything is made.
