9K, 14K, 18K Gold or Platinum? Choosing the Metal for Your Ring
The stone gets most of the attention, but the metal is what you feel on your hand every day. It sets the tone of the whole ring — warm or cool, delicate or substantial — and decides how it will age. At LM Jewellers we craft in solid 9K, 14K and 18K gold and in platinum. Here is how to choose between them.
What “karat” means
Pure gold (24K) is too soft for a ring you wear every day, so it is alloyed with other metals for strength and colour. The karat number tells you how much of the metal is pure gold:
| Metal | Purity | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9K gold | 37.5% gold | Hard-wearing, slightly paler colour | Value without compromising on solid gold |
| 14K gold | 58.5% gold | The balance of richness and durability | Everyday engagement rings and bands |
| 18K gold | 75% gold | Deeper, richer colour; a heavier, more luxurious feel | Heirloom pieces and warm yellow tones |
| Platinum | Typically 95% platinum | Naturally white, dense and weighty | Sensitive skin and lifelong white metal |
Yellow, white or rose?
Yellow gold
Classic and warm, and having a real moment again. In 18K it has a deep, buttery glow; in 9K it is softer and paler. Yellow gold also flatters stones with a whisper of warmth.
White gold
Gold alloyed with white metals, then finished with a bright rhodium coating. It gives a crisp, icy look that makes colourless stones look even whiter. The rhodium slowly softens with wear and can be refreshed periodically.
Rose gold
Gold alloyed with copper for a romantic blush tone. It is beautiful against warm skin tones and pairs well with vintage-inspired designs.
Why platinum is different
Platinum is naturally white all the way through, so it never needs plating. It is denser than gold, so a platinum ring feels noticeably heavier on the hand. When platinum scratches, the metal is displaced rather than lost, creating a soft satin patina over time. It is also hypoallergenic, which makes it a good choice if you have sensitive skin.
There is no wrong metal — only the one that suits the way you live.
How to choose
- If you work with your hands, the hardness of 9K or 14K gold, or the resilience of platinum, makes sense.
- If colour is everything, 18K yellow gold has the richest tone.
- If you want lifelong white without re-plating, choose platinum.
- If you are balancing budget and stone size, 9K or 14K lets more of your budget go into the stone.
- Matching a wedding band later? Choose the same metal and karat for both rings so they wear evenly side by side.
